Scotty Horey (B.A., M.M.A., D.M.A.) (USA) is solo percussionist, drummer, and teacher formerly based in Minneapolis, MN, USA, and currently residing in Wilmington, Delaware, where he serves as Instructor of Percussion at the Music School of Delaware while maintaining his work as a solo artist, clinician, and freelance drummer/percussionist. from 2020-2022, he lived in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico where he held the position of full professor of percussion at the famous Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas, the top percussion school of Mexico, and Adjunct Professor at Southwest Minnesota State University. His strongest passions in music and teaching include classical music, contemporary-classical music, progressive rock and jazz fusion, mind/body "holistic" awareness, and cultural exchange, typically performing on solo marimba or as a drummer. Former appointments include Adjunct Professor of Percussion at the University of Minnesota-Morris, and Principal Percussionist of the Mankato Symphony Orchestra, two position he held for 8 years. His passionate performing and teaching work has brought him through the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Portugal, Denmark, Poland, Greece, Mexico, and Colombia and has earned him a finalist position in the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians in 2017. Scotty was called “the Twin Cities’ hungriest young percussionist” by New Music Box, and “a performer of intelligence, raw artistry, and the utmost concentration and energy” by international icon composer James Dillon. While completing his master’s and doctorate degrees at the University of Minnesota, His teachers included some of the most widely respected names in the field: Fernando Meza, Stuart Marrs, Katarzyna Mycka, and James Dillon. Scotty Horey is an endorsing artist for MAPEX drums, VIC FIRTH sticks, SABIAN cymbals, and MAJESTIC percussion.
In recent years, Scotty has become regularly in demand as a solo artist and guest teacher worldwide with his exciting solo percussion concerts and inspiring teaching philosophy of “body-mind-heart-spirit-culture” and it’s relationship to making music in the present day. A practicioner of meditation for over 20 years, Scotty implements mindfulness, philosophy, and the body sciences into his approach to teaching. He has been a featured solo artist at the historic Marimba2010 International Festival and Conference, the First Annual International Festival of Percussion Ensembles of Costa Rica, the Federal University of Uberlandia International Percussion Festival, the 13th International Percussion Festival Patagonia-Argentina, the 10th International Percussion Festival of FOJI in Santiago de Chile, Serie Palcos Musicais de Londrina, the International Percussion Festival Salvador, The Royal Danish Academy of Music, The famous and historic Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, and many other festivals and universities all through-out the world. In 2021, Scotty was the only American featured artist at the famous Festival de International de Marimbistas in Chiapas, Mexico, and subsequently the Festival International de Marimbistas de Comitán in 2022. Cultural exchange and musical comaraderie bring out his most passionate work and deepest sense of purpose, regardless if it's in a large concert hall, or a small town community school.
Scotty maintains active work as a “on call” working percussionist and drummer, performing with professional symphony orchestras, choirs, rock and jazz groups on the concert stage, for recording sessions, and for musical theater. Most notably, he has worked with many prestigious internationally established performers and organizations including the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Ordway Center for Performing Arts, Ohio Light Opera, Cirque de la Symphone on ice, “So" Percussion, “La Sinfonietta" Chamber Ensemble of Chiapas, Mexico, Victor Mendoza, Bob Becker, James Dillon, Libby Larsen, Morton Lauridsen, William Bolcolm, and Michael Daugherty.
